Yes, an Indian resident can buy Stellantis — legally, in US dollars, under the RBI's Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS). STLA trades on NYSE. Stellantis was formed from the 2021 merger of PSA Group and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles — creating a 14-brand portfolio including Jeep, Ram, Dodge, Chrysler, Peugeot, Citroën, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Maserati, Opel/Vauxhall, and DS. STLA is the deepest-value play in global autos by P/E — the 2024 North America volume collapse and CEO change reset the stock, creating a recovery thesis under new leadership.

The 30-second version

  • Legal and simple. Buy STLA via Vested, INDmoney, or Interactive Brokers India.
  • Annual dividend. Netherlands 10% WHT (India-Netherlands DTAA); claim FTC via Form 44.
  • India tax on gains: hold more than 24 months12.5% LTCG (Section 112); shorter hold → slab rate.
  • Estate-tax trap: above $60,000 US-situs → up to 40% US estate tax; no treaty relief.
  • The position: STLA is a deep value turnaround — if new CEO Antonio Filosa can stabilise North America inventory, right-price Jeep/Ram, and cut costs, the stock re-rates from distressed auto to global OEM compounder. High operating leverage; the recovery could be significant if volume returns.

What Stellantis actually is

North America (largest profit pool): Jeep, Ram, Dodge, Chrysler. Jeep Grand Cherokee and Ram 1500 are the flagship profit contributors. North America was generating 60%+ of Stellantis EBIT before the 2024 volume collapse. Recovery here is the core bull thesis.

Europe (second largest): Peugeot, Citroën, Opel/Vauxhall, DS, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Maserati. Lower-margin, higher-volume market. European EV transition is more mandated than North America (Euro 7 regulations).

Leapmotor partnership: Stellantis invested $1.5B for 21% of Leapmotor (Chinese EV brand) in 2023. Leapmotor-Stellantis JV will distribute Leapmotor EVs outside China. This is Stellantis's low-cost EV sourcing strategy.

Maserati: Ultra-premium Italian brand — GranTurismo Folgore (EV), Levante, Ghibli. Shifting to EV. Small revenue contribution but significant brand equity.

Tax and compliance

Capital gains: 12.5% LTCG after 24 months; slab for shorter holds. Annual dividend: Netherlands 10% WHT (India-Netherlands DTAA); FTC via Form 44. Schedule FA mandatory.
