How to buy General Motors (GM) stock from India
Buy General Motors (GM) from India legally via the LRS, in INR. GM is Chevy, GMC, Cadillac, Buick — trucks dominate profit. Ultium EV platform. Cruise autonomous. Aggressive buyback program. Quarterly dividend ~1%. Section 112 guide for Indian investors.
Yes, an Indian resident can buy General Motors — legally, in US dollars, under the RBI's Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS). GM trades on NYSE. It pays a quarterly dividend (~1% yield) and has been aggressively buying back stock ($10B+ authorized). GM owns Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac, Buick, and OnStar — with full-size trucks and SUVs (Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Suburban, Escalade) generating the majority of profits. GM's Ultium EV platform is its next-generation battery architecture underpinning Blazer EV, Equinox EV, Silverado EV, and Cadillac Lyriq.

The 30-second version
- Legal and simple. Buy GM via Vested, INDmoney, or Interactive Brokers India.
- Quarterly dividend (~1%). File Form W-8BEN for 15% DTAA withholding; claim FTC via Form 44.
- India tax on gains: hold more than 24 months → 12.5% LTCG (Section 112); shorter hold → slab rate.
- Estate-tax trap: above $60,000 US-situs → up to 40% US estate tax; no treaty relief.
- The position: GM trades at one of the lowest P/E multiples among S&P 500 companies — the market is pricing in EV transition risk and long-term ICE decline. GM's truck franchise is extraordinarily profitable in the near term; the question is how long that window lasts and whether Ultium delivers a competitive EV portfolio.

What General Motors actually is
North America trucks and SUVs: Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, Escalade — the profit engine. Full-size trucks and large SUVs carry the highest margins in the industry. GM and Ford effectively split the US full-size truck market with Toyota's Tundra a distant third.
Ultium EVs: Blazer EV, Equinox EV (~$35,000, targeting mass-market), Silverado EV, Cadillac Lyriq, Cadillac Celestiq. GM has been ramping Ultium production after early delays. Equinox EV at $35K is the critical volume play against Tesla Model 3/Y.
GM Financial: Captive lending arm — retail and fleet financing, leasing. Growing income contributor as leasing penetration rises with EV adoption.
Cruise (autonomous vehicles): GM-majority-owned AV startup (SoftBank and Honda also invested). Cruise paused robotaxi operations in late 2023 following a pedestrian injury incident. Restarting with revised approach; commercialisation timeline reset.
International: GM China JV revenue has declined significantly as local Chinese EV brands (BYD, NIO, Li Auto) have taken share from GM's traditional Buick/Chevrolet/Cadillac China business.
Tax and compliance
Capital gains: 12.5% LTCG after 24 months; slab for shorter holds. Dividend: 15% US WHT (W-8BEN) + Indian slab; FTC via Form 44. Schedule FA mandatory.
