Yes, an Indian resident can buy Rivian — legally, in US dollars, under the RBI's Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS). RIVN trades on NASDAQ. Rivian is an EV startup focused on adventure-oriented trucks and SUVs (R1T pickup, R1S SUV) and commercial delivery vans (EDV for Amazon). It has achieved gross profit positivity in 2024 — a critical milestone for EV startups. Volkswagen's $5.8B joint venture (licensing Rivian's software and electrical architecture for VW Group vehicles globally) provides capital and validates Rivian's technology platform. This is a high-risk, early-stage position — max 1–3% allocation.

What Rivian actually is

R1T (electric pickup) and R1S (electric SUV): Adventure-focused vehicles with large battery options (345+ mile range), quad-motor performance, and unique features (gear tunnel, front trunk, Camp Mode). Targeting outdoor enthusiasts and premium EV buyers who find Tesla Cybertruck too polarising.

Amazon EDV (Electric Delivery Van): Rivian has a contract to deliver 100,000 electric delivery vans to Amazon (Amazon is also a major Rivian shareholder). EDV deliveries provide commercial volume and a captive anchor customer.

VW Joint Venture: Volkswagen is licensing Rivian's software-defined vehicle architecture (SEVA — Software Defined Vehicle Architecture, zonal computing, over-the-air updates) for VW Group vehicles. This turns Rivian into a technology platform licensor in addition to a vehicle manufacturer. The JV is valued at up to $5.8B with tranches tied to milestones.

R2 (mid-size, lower cost): Rivian's next vehicle platform — targeting ~$45,000 price point vs R1T's $70,000+. R2 is critical for volume scaling and is planned for a new facility in Georgia.

Path to profitability: Rivian achieved positive gross profit in Q3 2024 — a milestone that many EV startups have failed to reach. Full net income profitability depends on R2 volume ramp and cost reduction.

Tax and compliance

Capital gains: 12.5% LTCG after 24 months; slab for shorter holds. No dividend. Schedule FA mandatory.
