Yes, an Indian resident can buy Uranium Energy Corp — legally, in US dollars, under the RBI's Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS). UEC trades on NYSE American. It pays no dividend. UEC is the largest US domestic uranium producer, operating in-situ recovery (ISR) mines in Texas and Wyoming. The Nuclear Fuel Security Act (banning Russian uranium imports) directly benefits US domestic producers — UEC's domestic production is strategically positioned for utilities seeking non-Russian supply. UEC is a mid-stage producer, not a developer; it produces uranium today.

The 30-second version

  • Legal and simple. Buy UEC via Vested, INDmoney, or Interactive Brokers India.
  • No dividend. No US withholding or Form 44 complexity.
  • India tax: hold more than 24 months12.5% LTCG; shorter hold → slab rate. Section 112.
  • Estate-tax trap: US-situs asset — above $60,000 of total US-situs assets, up to 40% US estate tax, no treaty relief.
  • The US domestic production angle: UEC is a direct play on the Prohibiting Russian Uranium Imports Act and US utility demand for domestic supply. It does not have Cameco's size or track record — but it is producing and expanding, not waiting for permits like NXE. Position in the 5–10% range of a uranium allocation alongside CCJ as the core.

How to buy it — 3 steps

  1. Open an account and finish KYC. Use IBKR for the widest access and best execution, Rovia for a combined RSU + LRS experience, or INDmoney / Vested for a simple India-funded flow.
  2. Fund via the LRS. Cap: $250,000/year. 20% TCS above ₹7 lakh — creditable against income tax.
  3. Place the order. UEC is a small-to-mid cap (~$2–3B) with moderate liquidity. Use limit orders. UEC moves sharply on uranium spot price changes and US nuclear policy news.

What Uranium Energy Corp actually is

In-situ recovery (ISR) mining: UEC's primary production method is ISR — pumping oxygenated water through uranium-bearing sandstone formations to dissolve uranium in place, then pumping the uranium-bearing solution to the surface for processing. ISR has significantly lower capital cost and surface disturbance than conventional open-pit or underground mining. UEC's Texas operations (Hobson processing facility and satellite wellfields) and Wyoming operations (Reno Creek — largest permitted ISR project in the US) are both ISR.

Production status: UEC restarted production at the Palangana and Burke Hollow mines in Texas. The Reno Creek project in Wyoming is being advanced toward production. UEC also holds physical uranium purchased at lower prices, held as inventory.

The Russia import ban: The Prohibiting Russian Uranium Imports Act (signed May 2024) bans Russian enriched uranium products from the US. US utilities sourced approximately 24% of their enriched uranium from Russia. They must now replace this supply from domestic or allied sources. UEC — as a US producer with permits and processing infrastructure in place — is one of the direct beneficiaries. Long-term utility contracts at above-spot prices are the commercial opportunity.

Paladin Energy acquisition: UEC announced an acquisition of Paladin Energy (Australian uranium producer, Langer Heinrich mine in Namibia). If completed, this adds non-US production diversity. Monitor for completion timeline and integration.
