Buy Hut 8 (HUT) from India legally via the LRS, in INR. Hut 8 is a Canadian Bitcoin miner pivoting to AI data center hosting — dual business model differentiates it from pure-play miners MARA and RIOT. Gains at 12.5% LTCG not 30% VDA. Section 112 guide.

Yes, an Indian resident can buy Hut 8 — legally, in US dollars, under the RBI's Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS). HUT trades on NASDAQ. It pays no dividend. Hut 8 is a Canadian-founded Bitcoin miner (now incorporated in the US post-merger with US Bitcoin Corp) pursuing a dual business model: Bitcoin mining alongside high-performance compute (HPC) hosting for AI and GPU workloads. The HPC pivot differentiates HUT from pure-play miners like MARA and RIOT, adding a revenue stream less tied to Bitcoin price cycles.

The 30-second version

  • Legal and simple. Buy HUT via Vested, INDmoney, or Interactive Brokers India.
  • No dividend. No US withholding or Form 44 complexity.
  • India tax: HUT equity gains taxed at 12.5% LTCG after 24 months (Section 112) — not the 30% VDA rate. Shorter holds at slab rate.
  • Estate-tax trap: US-situs asset — above $60,000 of total US-situs assets, up to 40% US estate tax, no treaty relief.
  • The dual-model angle: HUT is a bet that Bitcoin mining infrastructure can be repurposed into AI data center infrastructure. This is the thesis. If Bitcoin rises, mining revenue rises. If AI compute demand rises, HPC hosting revenue rises. The risk is execution — transitioning from mining to managed HPC is operationally complex, and HUT is smaller than the hyperscalers competing for AI workloads.

How to buy it — 3 steps

  1. Open an account and finish KYC. Vested or INDmoney for simplicity; IBKR India for larger positions.
  2. Fund via the LRS. Cap: $250,000/year. 20% TCS above ₹7 lakh — creditable against income tax.
  3. Place the order. HUT is smaller by market cap than MARA or RIOT — use limit orders, especially outside US market hours. HUT moves with Bitcoin but also with AI infrastructure sentiment, making it more volatile than pure miners during AI narrative cycles.

What Hut 8 actually is

Bitcoin mining: HUT operates ASIC mining facilities in the US and Canada. Hashrate is approximately 9–10 EH/s — significantly smaller than MARA (50 EH/s) and RIOT (31 EH/s). HUT has been selective about expanding mining rather than maximising hashrate growth, because the HPC strategy is the strategic focus.

HPC (high-performance compute) hosting: HUT leases data center capacity, power, and cooling infrastructure to customers running GPU clusters for AI training and inference. This is the same trend Core Scientific and CleanSpark have pursued. Hut 8 has secured colocation agreements with GPU computing operators. Revenue from HPC is lower-margin than mining at Bitcoin's current price, but provides revenue stability.

US Bitcoin Corp merger (2023): Hut 8 merged with US Bitcoin Corp in 2023, adding US-based mining sites and restructuring as a US company. The combined entity retained the Hut 8 name and NASDAQ listing.

Bitcoin balance sheet: HUT holds Bitcoin on its balance sheet, adding exposure to BTC price movements beyond just mining revenue.
