Groww launched US stock investing in beta in October 2026, with full rollout expected by mid-November 2026. It uses the GIFT City IFSC route via Alpaca Securities (Alpaca acquired the Zincmoney GIFT City entity to build this infrastructure) and offers one of the broadest stock universes of any Indian-facing platform.

This guide covers every fee, how the platform works, FX costs, and how to decide if Groww is the right platform for your US investing.

How Groww US stocks works

US stock investing is integrated into the Groww app — the same product you use for Indian mutual funds, stocks, and gold. No separate app needed. Your existing Groww account and KYC are used.

The regulatory structure: Groww holds an IFSCA Global Access Provider (GAP) licence, operating through GIFT City. Your holdings are cleared through Alpaca Securities' GIFT City entity, an IFSCA-regulated structure.

Transfer mechanism: Domestic NEFT/IMPS from your Indian bank account to a GIFT City entity. No SWIFT, no A2 form, no Form 15CA/15CB required.

Brokerage at different trade sizes

Trade sizeBrokerageEffective rate
$100 (≈₹8,500)$1.00 (minimum applies)1.0%
$500 (≈₹42,500)$1.00 (minimum applies)0.2%
$1,000 (≈₹85,000)$1.000.1%
$5,000 (≈₹4.25L)$5.000.1%
$10,000 (≈₹8.5L)$10.000.1%
$20,000 (≈₹17L)$20.000.1%

Unlike Zerodha (which caps at $10), Groww has no stated upper cap — 0.1% continues above $10,000. On a $20,000 trade, Groww charges $20 vs Zerodha's $10.

FX markup

Groww's FX markup ranges from 0.5% to 3.5% above the market rate, depending on transfer amount and timing. This is a wide range — at 0.5% it is competitive, at 3.5% it is the highest of any platform in this comparison.

The rate is dynamic. Before confirming a transfer, the Groww app shows the rate applied to your specific transaction. Check this number before every transfer — especially for large amounts.

Transfer amountFX cost at 0.5%FX cost at 2.0%FX cost at 3.5%
₹5 lakh≈₹2,500≈₹10,000≈₹17,500
₹10 lakh≈₹5,000≈₹20,000≈₹35,000
₹25 lakh≈₹12,500≈₹50,000≈₹87,500

At the higher end of the FX range, Groww's total cost (brokerage + FX) can significantly exceed platforms with tighter markup. Always verify the in-app rate before transferring.

Stock universe

Groww offers 10,000+ US stocks and ETFs — among the broadest of any Indian-facing platform. Fractional shares are supported from $1.

This breadth matches INDmoney and Angel One, and significantly exceeds Zerodha's ~2,000 names at launch. If you invest in mid-caps, sector ETFs, or thematic names, Groww's universe is more likely to include what you're looking for.

TCS and LRS

Groww's GIFT City route is LRS-compliant:

  • 0% TCS on investment remittances up to ₹10 lakh per financial year
  • 20% TCS on the amount above ₹10 lakh per year

The ₹10L threshold applies to your total across all LRS and GIFT City investment remittances combined. Groww investments count toward your $250,000 annual LRS ceiling.

Tax treatment

Capital gains

If Section 10(4D) exemption does not apply:

  • Short-term (≤24 months): taxed at your income slab rate
  • Long-term (>24 months): 12.5% under Section 112

Section 10(4D) potential exemption

Groww's GIFT City IFSC structure means gains may qualify for exemption under Section 10(4D) — same as all other GIFT City platforms. Rules are complex and guidance is evolving. Verify with a CA.

Groww vs alternatives

Choose Groww if:

  • You are already a Groww user — same app, no extra KYC
  • You need a broad stock universe (10,000+ names)
  • Your typical trade size is ₹85,000+ (≈$1,000) where the $1 minimum becomes irrelevant
  • You're in beta rollout and comfortable with an early product

Choose Zerodha over Groww if:

  • Your typical trade is under $1,000 — Zerodha's 0.1% rate applies without a $1 floor
  • You want a brokerage cap ($10 max vs Groww's uncapped 0.1%)
  • You want tighter FX with a disclosed fixed markup

Choose INDmoney over Groww if:

  • You want ITR-format lot-level tax reports
  • You need OTC stock access
  • You want a proven, multi-year operating track record

Choose Rovia over Groww if:

  • You hold RSUs at a US employer broker — Rovia is the only platform with inbound ACATS

Frequently asked questions

What does Groww charge for US stocks?
▾
Groww charges 0.1% brokerage per trade or $1 minimum, whichever is higher. There is no annual platform fee or account opening fee. The $1 minimum means small trades (under $1,000) are disproportionately expensive — on a $100 trade, the effective brokerage is 1%. For trades above $1,000, the 0.1% rate applies.
Does Groww use LRS or GIFT City for US stocks?
▾
Groww uses the GIFT City IFSC route via Alpaca Securities' GIFT City entity. Funds are transferred domestically via NEFT/IMPS. TCS applies at standard rates (0% up to ₹10L/year, 20% above), and the $250,000 annual LRS cap applies equally.
How many stocks can I buy on Groww US?
▾
Groww's US stock universe covers 10,000+ US stocks and ETFs — one of the broadest of any Indian-facing platform, on par with INDmoney. This includes the full NYSE/NASDAQ large-cap universe, mid-caps, sector ETFs, and many thematic names. Fractional shares are supported from $1.
What is Groww's FX markup for US stocks?
▾
Groww's FX markup ranges from 0.5% to 3.5% above the market rate, depending on the transfer amount and timing. The wide range reflects dynamic forex pricing. Check the current rate in the Groww app before initiating a transfer — the rate displayed before you confirm the transfer is what applies.
