Yes, an Indian resident can buy XPeng — legally, in US dollars, under the RBI's Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS). XPEV trades on NYSE. XPeng is the most software-focused of China's listed EV pure-plays — its XNGP (Navigate on Autopilot) system delivers city-level autonomous driving without HD maps, using a pure-vision + AI stack. Volkswagen's 4.99% strategic stake validates XPeng's technology platform thesis. The MONA sub-brand targets the ¥100,000–150,000 volume segment.

The 30-second version

  • Buy via IBKR, Rovia, INDmoney, or Vested.
  • No dividend. XPEV is not yet consistently profitable.
  • VIE risk: ADR holders own a Cayman structure, not Chinese operating assets directly.
  • India tax on gains: hold more than 24 months12.5% LTCG (Section 112); shorter hold → slab rate.
  • Estate-tax trap: above $60,000 US-situs → up to 40% US estate tax; no treaty relief.
  • The position: XPEV is a technology bet on China's AD leadership — if XNGP achieves scale and VW partnership translates to platform licensing revenue, XPeng re-rates from EV company to technology platform. High risk; sub-3% allocation.

What XPeng actually is

XNGP autonomous driving: XPeng's city-level Navigate on Autopilot uses cameras, ultrasonic sensors, and AI (Turing chip, proprietary end-to-end model) to drive in urban environments without HD maps. XNGP is considered the most technically advanced AD system in China after Huawei ADS. This is the core technology asset.

P and G series (current flagship): P7 (sedan), G6 and G9 (SUVs), X9 (flagship MPV). Mid-to-premium positioning, ¥150,000–400,000 range.

MONA sub-brand: Mass-market sub-brand targeting ¥100,000–150,000 segment. M03 launched 2024, targeting volume and AI-driving-feature penetration at lower price points.

VW partnership: Two Volkswagen-branded EVs built on XPeng's CCEA architecture and software platform, targeting 2026 launch. XPeng earns platform licensing fees and positions itself as a technology supplier to legacy OEMs — a Qualcomm-style chip-to-platform model.

Flying car (X2): XPeng Aeroht subsidiary is developing flying cars — low-altitude mobility. Early commercial development; not a near-term revenue driver.

Tax and compliance

Capital gains: 12.5% LTCG after 24 months; slab for shorter holds. No dividend. Schedule FA mandatory. VIE risk applies.
