Yes, an Indian resident can buy TSMC — legally, in US dollars, under the RBI's Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS). TSM trades on NYSE as an ADR. It pays a quarterly dividend. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company is the world's most advanced semiconductor foundry — it manufactures chips designed by NVIDIA, Apple, AMD, Qualcomm, and effectively every major fabless semiconductor company. Without TSMC, the AI build-out stops. The stock provides indirect exposure to the entire advanced semiconductor ecosystem at one remove from any single chip designer's execution risk.

The 30-second version

  • Legal and simple. Buy TSM via Vested, INDmoney, or Interactive Brokers India.
  • Quarterly dividend. Taiwan withholds 21% at source (not the 15% DTAA rate — Taiwan is not a US company). File Form W-8BEN with your broker; claim FTC via Form 44.
  • India tax on gains: hold more than 24 months12.5% LTCG (Section 112); shorter hold → slab rate.
  • Estate-tax trap: US-listed ADRs — consult a tax adviser on US estate tax treatment for large positions.
  • The position: TSM is the picks-and-shovels play on AI — it makes the chips for every major AI accelerator, every premium smartphone, and every advanced logic product. The Taiwan geopolitical risk is the existential risk to price in. TSM is a core semiconductor holding for most portfolios.

How to buy it — 3 steps

  1. Open an account and finish KYC. Use IBKR for the widest access and best execution, Rovia for a combined RSU + LRS experience, or INDmoney / Vested for a simple India-funded flow. File Form W-8BEN during onboarding.
  2. Fund via the LRS. Cap: $250,000/year. 20% TCS above ₹7 lakh — creditable against income tax.
  3. Place the order. TSM is highly liquid. Market orders work. TSM reports quarterly — earnings include gross margin guidance that moves the stock significantly. Q4 calls in January are the most important (full-year view and next-year guidance).

What TSMC actually is

TSMC is a pure-play foundry — it does not design chips. It manufactures chips to the specifications of its customers (NVIDIA, Apple, AMD, Qualcomm, Broadcom, MediaTek, and hundreds of others). This model creates a powerful dynamic: the best chip designers in the world all need TSMC's manufacturing capability, and TSMC invests all its R&D into process technology rather than competing with its customers on chip design.

Process node leadership:

  • 3nm (N3E): Volume production since 2023; used for Apple A17 Pro, iPhone 15
  • 2nm (N2): Ramping in 2025; used for Apple A18, NVIDIA next-gen
  • 1.6nm (A16): In development; expected 2026

Who depends on TSMC:

  • NVIDIA's H100, H200, Blackwell GPUs: all made at TSMC
  • Apple's A-series and M-series chips: all made at TSMC
  • AMD's Ryzen and MI300: made at TSMC
  • Qualcomm's Snapdragon: made at TSMC
  • No advanced logic alternative exists — Samsung Foundry is the only credible competitor, at 1–2 generations behind on yield

Geographic diversification (in progress):

  • Arizona (Fab 21): 4nm production started 2024; 2nm planned
  • Japan (JASM): 12nm, 16nm; in production
  • Germany (ESMC): 12nm+; planned 2027
  • Taiwan remains the sole location for cutting-edge 2nm and below

Taiwan risk: This is the most important risk for TSM investors. TSMC's concentration in Taiwan means any Taiwan Strait conflict would be catastrophic — both for TSMC operationally and for global technology supply chains. The US, Japan, and EU are all incentivising TSMC to build advanced fabs outside Taiwan precisely because of this concentration risk.

The tax that actually matters

On capital gains:

Holding periodTreatmentRate
24 months or lessShort-termYour slab rate
More than 24 monthsLong-term12.5%, no indexation

On quarterly dividend: Taiwan withholds 21% at source (Taiwan is not subject to the India-US DTAA — the 15% DTAA rate does not apply here). Claim the 21% Taiwan withholding as a foreign tax credit via Form 44.
