How to buy Planet Labs (PL) stock from India
Buy Planet Labs (PL) from India legally via the LRS, in INR. Planet operates the world's largest commercial Earth observation constellation — 200+ satellites, daily global imagery, government and commercial data subscriptions. Pre-profit, growing ARR. Section 112 guide.
Yes, an Indian resident can buy Planet Labs — legally, in US dollars, under the RBI's Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS). PL trades on NYSE. It pays no dividend. Planet Labs operates the world's largest commercial Earth observation constellation — 200+ satellites that image the entire land surface of Earth every day. Revenue comes from government and commercial subscriptions to satellite imagery and analytics. Planet is pre-profit but growing annual recurring revenue (ARR), and its data pipeline has no commercial equivalent.

The 30-second version
- Legal and simple. Buy PL via Vested, INDmoney, or Interactive Brokers India.
- No dividend. No US withholding or Form 44 complexity.
- India tax: hold more than 24 months → 12.5% LTCG; shorter hold → slab rate. Section 112.
- Estate-tax trap: US-situs asset — above $60,000 of total US-situs assets, up to 40% US estate tax, no treaty relief.
- The thesis: Planet's daily global imagery is a genuine data moat — no other commercial operator images the entire Earth every day at this resolution. The question is monetisation pace: government contract growth, commercial subscription expansion, and the path to profitability. PL is a Watch position — compelling asset, unclear timing to positive free cash flow.
Quick facts
| Can an Indian resident buy it? | Yes — fully legal under the LRS |
| Ticker / exchange | PL / NYSE |
| How | IBKR, Rovia, INDmoney, or Vested |
| Minimum | A fraction of one share |
| Dividend | None |
| India tax on gains | 12.5% LTCG after 24 months; else your slab (Section 112) |
| Estate-tax risk | US-situs above $60k → up to 40%, no treaty relief |

How to buy it — 3 steps
- Open an account and finish KYC. Use IBKR for the widest access and best execution, Rovia for a combined RSU + LRS experience, or INDmoney / Vested for a simple India-funded flow.
- Fund via the LRS. Cap: $250,000/year. 20% TCS above ₹7 lakh — creditable against income tax.
- Place the order. PL is a small-cap (~$700M–$1B market cap) with lower liquidity than RKLB or ASTS. Use limit orders. PL moves on government contract announcements, NRO/NGA intelligence community awards, and quarterly ARR disclosures.
What Planet Labs actually does
The constellation: Planet operates approximately 130+ Dove cubesats (3U form factor) and 20+ SkySat satellites. Doves capture daily global land coverage at 3–5 metre resolution; SkySats can task-image specific locations at 50cm resolution for on-demand collection.
The data pipeline: Planet captures ~30 million square kilometres of imagery per day — roughly the entire ice-free land surface. Images are processed and made available to customers through Planet's platform (Planet Explorer, NICFI, APIs). The combination of daily cadence and near-global coverage is unique: competitors like Maxar/DigitalGlobe have higher-resolution satellites but do not achieve daily global coverage.
Government customers: The US National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), and Department of Defense are Planet's largest customers. International government contracts (allied nations, NATO partners) are growing. Government ARR is the most stable revenue component.
Commercial customers: Agriculture (crop monitoring, yield estimation), commodity trading (port activity, oil storage), insurance (disaster damage assessment), and logistics (supply chain visibility). Commercial ARR is growing but from a smaller base.
Path to profitability: Planet has been reducing cash burn through headcount optimisation and focusing on higher-margin government contracts. ARR growth and gross margin expansion are the metrics to watch quarterly.
The tax that actually matters

|---|---|---|
| 24 months or less | Short-term | Your slab rate |
| More than 24 months | Long-term | 12.5%, no indexation |
