How to buy Occidental Petroleum (OXY) stock from India
Buy Occidental Petroleum (OXY) from India legally via the LRS, in INR. OXY is Warren Buffett's oil bet — Permian Basin, CrownRock acquisition, carbon capture (1PointFive). Higher oil-price leverage than XOM or CVX. Section 112 guide.
Yes, an Indian resident can buy Occidental Petroleum — legally, in US dollars, under the RBI's Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS). OXY trades on NYSE. It pays a quarterly dividend. Occidental is Warren Buffett's oil bet — Berkshire Hathaway owns ~28% of OXY's common equity. OXY is a Permian Basin-focused producer with more oil-price leverage than integrated majors XOM or CVX, a $12B CrownRock acquisition that expanded its Permian footprint, and a carbon capture subsidiary (1PointFive) building direct air capture plants in the Permian.

The 30-second version
- Legal and simple. Buy OXY via Vested, INDmoney, or Interactive Brokers India.
- Quarterly dividend. File Form W-8BEN for 15% DTAA withholding; claim FTC via Form 44.
- India tax on gains: hold more than 24 months → 12.5% LTCG (Section 112); shorter hold → slab rate.
- Estate-tax trap: above $60,000 US-situs → up to 40% US estate tax; no treaty relief.
- The Buffett signal: Buffett has bought OXY repeatedly above $50/share. His ~28% stake and Berkshire's preferred shares ($10B, 8% cumulative preferred) create alignment between Berkshire's interests and OXY's capital discipline. OXY has more debt than XOM/CVX (from the Anadarko acquisition in 2019 and CrownRock in 2024) — balance sheet de-leveraging is the ongoing story.

What OXY actually is
Permian Basin production: OXY is one of the Permian's largest producers — the CrownRock acquisition (closed 2024) added ~170,000 barrels/day of production in the Midland Basin. Unlike integrated majors, OXY's earnings are highly sensitive to oil price — every $10 change in oil price moves OXY's free cash flow significantly.
OxyChem (chemicals): OXY owns a chemicals business (chlorine, caustic soda, PVC feedstocks) that provides cash flow diversification. OxyChem benefits from cheap US natural gas (feedstock) and export markets.
1PointFive (carbon capture): OXY's subsidiary 1PointFive is building Stratos — the world's first commercial-scale direct air capture (DAC) plant in the Permian Basin. DAC removes CO2 directly from the atmosphere. This is early-stage technology with significant government support (DOE funding). The carbon capture angle is a long-dated option on carbon removal economics.
Balance sheet: OXY carries more debt than XOM/CVX — the Anadarko acquisition (2019) and CrownRock (2024) were funded partly with debt. Debt reduction is a priority; at higher oil prices, OXY pays down debt faster, unlocking dividend increases.
Tax and compliance
Capital gains: 12.5% LTCG after 24 months; slab for shorter holds. Dividend: 15% US WHT (W-8BEN) + Indian slab; FTC via Form 44. Schedule FA mandatory.
