How to buy Joby Aviation (JOBY) stock from India
Buy Joby Aviation (JOBY) from India legally via the LRS, in INR. JOBY pays no dividend — pre-revenue eVTOL speculative bet. Toyota partnership, FAA certification progress, and the air taxi timeline explained for Indian investors.
Yes, an Indian resident can buy Joby Aviation — legally, in US dollars, under the RBI's Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS). JOBY trades on NYSE. It pays no dividend. The buying mechanics are straightforward; the harder question is whether you want exposure to the leading eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing) company — pre-revenue, pre-profit, with FAA certification as the key binary event.

The 30-second version
- Legal and simple. Buy JOBY via Vested, INDmoney, or Interactive Brokers India.
- No dividend. No US withholding or Form 44 complexity.
- India tax: hold more than 24 months → 12.5% LTCG; shorter hold → slab rate. Section 112.
- Estate-tax trap: US-situs asset — above $60,000 of total US-situs assets, up to 40% US estate tax, no treaty relief.
- The honest framing: JOBY is the highest-conviction public eVTOL bet — but it is pre-revenue and depends on FAA type certification and commercial launch. Toyota's $894 million investment provides funding runway and industrial partnership credibility. The stock is highly sensitive to certification news. Size as a speculative satellite position, not a core holding.

How to buy it — 3 steps
- Open an account and finish KYC. Use IBKR for the widest access and best execution, Rovia for a combined RSU + LRS experience, or INDmoney / Vested for a simple India-funded flow.
- Fund via the LRS. Cap: $250,000/year. 20% TCS above ₹7 lakh — creditable against tax liability.
- Place the order. JOBY is highly sensitive to FAA certification news, test flight results, and Toyota/Delta updates. The stock can move 20–40% on a single announcement. Stagger entries; don't put a full allocation in at once.
What Joby Aviation actually is
Joby is developing a five-seat electric air taxi with a range of ~150 miles and a top speed of ~200 mph. The aircraft uses six tilting rotors to take off and land vertically (like a helicopter) but flies efficiently as a fixed-wing aircraft in cruise. Electric propulsion means near-zero operating noise — the key advantage for urban air mobility.
The Toyota relationship is the most important fact about Joby. Toyota has committed $894 million in total investment and provides manufacturing expertise, supply chain support, and industrial-scale production knowledge. Joby is building a manufacturing facility in Marina, California — Toyota engineers are involved in production design. This is not a typical aerospace startup; it has the world's best automotive manufacturer as its industrial partner.
Delta Air Lines invested $200 million and committed to purchasing Joby aircraft for airport-to-city air taxi routes (JFK to Manhattan, LAX to Santa Monica, etc.). Delta is the channel-to-market.
FAA type certification: Joby submitted its full type certification application to the FAA. This is the regulatory gate that must clear before commercial operations begin. Target: 2025 certification, commercial launch 2025–2026. Timeline risk is real — FAA certification is complex and delays are common in new aircraft categories.
Competitive context: Other eVTOL companies (Archer Aviation ACHR, Lilium — bankrupt, Wisk — Boeing-backed) compete for the same certification and commercial market. JOBY is the most funded and the furthest along in the FAA process among the public companies.
The tax that actually matters
No dividend means a clean capital-gains-only picture:
| Holding period | Treatment | Rate |
|---|---|---|
| 24 months or less | Short-term | Your slab rate |
| More than 24 months | Long-term | 12.5%, no indexation |

The $60,000 estate-tax trap
Directly-held JOBY is a US-situs asset. Above $60,000 of total US-situs assets at death, US estate tax of up to 40% applies — no India-US treaty protection. See the estate-tax trap guide.
