Yes, an Indian resident can buy IRBO — legally, in US dollars, under the RBI's Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS). IRBO (iShares Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Multisector ETF) trades on NYSE Arca. It pays a small annual distribution. IRBO is the lowest-cost robotics ETF available to Indian LRS investors at 0.47% TER — half the cost of ROBO and 30% cheaper than BOTZ. It blends robotics hardware names with AI software companies in an equal-weight construction of approximately 50 holdings.

The 30-second version

  • Legal and simple. Buy IRBO via Vested, INDmoney, or Interactive Brokers India.
  • Small annual distribution. File Form W-8BEN for 15% DTAA withholding; claim FTC via Form 44.
  • India tax on gains: hold more than 24 months12.5% LTCG (Section 112); shorter hold → slab rate.
  • Estate-tax trap: US-situs ETF units — above $60,000 of total US-situs assets, up to 40% US estate tax, no treaty relief.
  • The case for IRBO over BOTZ or ROBO: If you want robotics exposure and cost matters, IRBO is the default. The tradeoff is that IRBO is not a pure-play robotics ETF — it includes AI software companies (Alphabet, Baidu, Palantir) that are only tangentially robotics. If you want the tightest robotics supply chain exposure, ROBO is more precise. If you want the lowest cost across the broadest robotics-adjacent tech universe, IRBO wins.

How to buy it — 3 steps

  1. Open an account and finish KYC. Use IBKR for the widest access and best execution, Rovia for a combined RSU + LRS experience, or INDmoney / Vested for a simple India-funded flow. File Form W-8BEN during onboarding.
  2. Fund via the LRS. Cap: $250,000/year. 20% TCS above ₹7 lakh — creditable against income tax.
  3. Place the order. IRBO has lower AUM than BOTZ (~$700M vs ~$2.8B) but sufficient liquidity for standard position sizes. Use limit orders for large orders.

What IRBO actually holds

IRBO tracks the NYSE FactSet Global Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Index — approximately 50 equal-weighted holdings across robotics hardware and AI software:

Selected holdings (each ~2% weight at rebalance):

  • Fanuc — industrial robots and CNC
  • Keyence — sensors and machine vision
  • Cognex — machine vision systems
  • Intuitive Surgical — surgical robotics
  • Yaskawa Electric — industrial robots and motion control
  • Alphabet (Google) — AI software, autonomous vehicle (Waymo)
  • Baidu — AI and autonomous driving
  • Palantir — AI data analytics
  • ABB — industrial automation and robots
  • Omron — industrial automation and collaborative robots

The AI software blend: IRBO's index includes AI software companies alongside robotics hardware makers. This is the key distinction from ROBO (which excludes software-pure names) and BOTZ (which tilts heavily to industrial automation). IRBO's inclusion of Alphabet and Baidu means it has more correlation to broader tech/AI than ROBO.

The $60,000 estate-tax trap
