How to buy BWX Technologies (BWXT) stock from India
Buy BWX Technologies (BWXT) from India legally via the LRS, in INR. BWXT makes nuclear reactors for the US Navy and is developing commercial microreactors. Dividend, Section 112 capital-gains tax, and why it's the most underappreciated nuclear stock for Indian investors.
Yes, an Indian resident can buy BWX Technologies — legally, in US dollars, under the RBI's Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS). BWXT trades on NYSE. It pays a quarterly dividend. BWXT is the most overlooked name in nuclear: not a miner, not a utility, but the company that manufactures the nuclear reactor plants that power every submarine and aircraft carrier in the US Navy fleet — a monopoly position that cannot be competed away for decades.

The 30-second version
- Legal and simple. Buy BWXT via Vested, INDmoney, or Interactive Brokers India.
- Quarterly dividend. File Form W-8BEN for 15% DTAA withholding rate. Claim the FTC via Form 44 in your ITR. Yield approximately 0.7%.
- India tax on gains: hold more than 24 months → 12.5% LTCG (Section 112); shorter hold → slab rate.
- Estate-tax trap: US-situs asset — above $60,000 of total US-situs assets, up to 40% US estate tax, no treaty relief.
- Why it's interesting: BWXT is the sole certified manufacturer of US naval nuclear propulsion systems — Virginia-class submarines, Columbia-class SSBNs, Gerald R. Ford-class carriers. No competitor can enter this market without 10+ years of qualification. The backlog jumped from $4.88B to $8.65B (+77%) in one year on the naval reactor pricing agreement. And commercial nuclear microreactors are optionality you don't pay for in the current valuation.
Quick facts
| Can an Indian resident buy it? | Yes — fully legal under the LRS |
| Ticker / exchange | BWXT / NYSE |
| How | IBKR, Rovia, INDmoney, or Vested |
| Minimum | A fraction of one share |
| Dividend | Yes — quarterly (~0.7% yield) |
| India tax on gains | 12.5% LTCG after 24 months; else your slab (Section 112) |
| Dividend tax | 15% US WHT (DTAA) + Indian slab; FTC via Form 44 |
| Estate-tax risk | US-situs above $60k → up to 40%, no treaty relief |
| Annual compliance | Schedule FA + quarterly dividend disclosure every year |
How to buy it — 3 steps
- Open an account and finish KYC. Use IBKR for the widest access and best execution, Rovia for a combined RSU + LRS experience, or INDmoney / Vested for a simple India-funded flow. File Form W-8BEN to get the 15% DTAA withholding rate on dividends.
- Fund via the LRS. Cap: $250,000/year. 20% TCS above ₹7 lakh — a creditable prepayment, not a permanent cost.
- Place the order. BWXT trades in the $100–120 range (variable). Less volatile than uranium miners or nuclear utilities — the Navy contract provides earnings visibility that commodity-linked names lack. A steady accumulation strategy works well here.
What BWXT actually is
BWX Technologies has three businesses:
Government Operations (largest segment, ~70% of revenue): Manufactures naval nuclear reactor plants for the US Navy — the complete nuclear propulsion systems for Virginia-class attack submarines, Columbia-class ballistic missile submarines (the nuclear deterrent backbone), and Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carriers. BWXT is the sole certified supplier of these systems. The Navy cannot switch to another vendor without a decade-plus qualification process. Q1 2026 revenue: $521 million. Backlog: $8.65 billion (up 77% YoY on a new pricing agreement).
Commercial Operations (~20% of revenue): Nuclear fuel fabrication, nuclear services, and plant maintenance for civilian nuclear power plants. This segment benefits from nuclear utility investment and SMR development.
Medical (~10% of revenue): Produces medical radioisotopes used in nuclear medicine diagnostics and cancer therapy (Tc-99m, Lu-177). This is a growing segment tied to aging demographics and cancer treatment demand — uncorrelated to defense or power market cycles.
Q1 2026 total revenue: $742 million (+13% YoY). Adjusted EBITDA margin: ~19.5%. 2026 full-year guidance: $2.95–3.05B revenue. BWXT is consistently profitable with expanding margins — unlike most "nuclear" names which are either commodity-driven (miners) or policy-dependent (utilities).
The AUKUS deal (US-UK-Australia submarine transfer) adds incremental Government Operations demand — additional Virginia-class submarines must be manufactured, and BWXT is the only source for their reactor plants.
The tax that actually matters
On capital gains:
| Holding period | Treatment | Rate |
|---|---|---|
| 24 months or less | Short-term | Your slab rate |
| More than 24 months | Long-term | 12.5%, no indexation |
On dividends: US withholds 15% (with Form W-8BEN); balance taxed at Indian slab; claim FTC via Form 44. At ~0.7% yield, the dividend is modest but real — budget 30–60 minutes per year for the Form 44 FTC filing.

The $60,000 estate-tax trap
Directly-held BWXT is a US-situs asset. Above $60,000 of total US-situs holdings at death, US estate tax of up to 40% applies — no India-US treaty protection. See the estate-tax trap guide.
